A thoughtful project begins with a clear sense of what matters. Before focusing on individual finishes or floor plans, take a step back and think about the life you want the space to support.

Watch how your kitchen works

Before choosing a cabinet color, notice how you prepare meals, put groceries away and clean up. Think about who uses the room at the same time and where everyday items tend to collect. The layout should respond to those habits.

Give storage a purpose

List the items you use most often and where you would like to reach them. Small appliances, cookware and pantry supplies each create different storage needs. This list can make cabinet discussions more specific than simply asking for more space.

Think about gathering

An island can be a work surface, a place to eat or a social center. Decide which role matters most to you. Bring your priorities to the design conversation so circulation, seating and storage can be considered together.

Choose a connected palette

Once the room’s purpose is clear, compare cabinetry, countertops and lighting as a group. View samples together and think about their relationship to the adjoining rooms. The goal is a kitchen that feels connected to both your home and the way you live.

A home should begin with the way you live, then take shape around it.
Before your first conversation

Your starting-point checklist.

  • Write down the changes that would make the biggest difference.
  • Gather a few reference images and explain what you like about them.
  • List your priorities, questions and preferred timing.
